Hydrogen

The global shift to clean and sustainable energy has highlighted hydrogen's importance. It emerges as a key solution for sectors hard to electrify traditionally. Hydrogen offers effective energy storage, versatile use, and zero greenhouse gas emissions. These qualities position it as a crucial player in achieving a carbon-neutral future.

Status and potential for hydrogen in Norway

Hydrogen serves as a versatile energy carrier, ideal for electrifying areas where batteries and traditional electrification fall short. This includes long-distance transport and various "hard-to-abate" sectors lacking alternative solutions. With attributes such as efficient energy storage, versatile use, and zero greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen is key to achieving a carbon-neutral future.

Norway, with its extensive territory, is very well placed to become a leading producer and consumer of hydrogen. This advantage stem from its rich access to clean energy and large areas suitable for storage and production.

The interest in hydrogen produced with low or zero emissions has increased significantly in recent years, and the Norwegian authorities have a high level of ambition for hydrogen in Norway.

What does it take to succeed?

For Norway to succeed with hydrogen, it is essential to develop a complete value chain from start to finish. A key factor is to establish a clear model for who and which sectors will use hydrogen, in order to increase demand. On the other hand, it is equally important to facilitate the establishment of production to ensure a strong supply side. This means, among other things, that framework conditions must be in place.

Where are we today?

Hydrogen production is currently costly compared to the direct use of electricity, which means that hydrogen is rarely produced, despite a significant increase in interest in recent years.

The Norwegian government has formulated a strategy and action plan. This plan aims to establish a complete hydrogen value chain, including production, distribution and usage, and to promote the development of the hydrogen market in Europe.

Our work

Thommessen's renewable energy and infrastructure team has worked with power generation for many years and has specialized expertise in this area. We assist entities who wish to establish production facilities, for instance with agreements and permits needed to establish such projects. We also assist in connection with financing and transactions.

Please contact us if you would like to know more about how we work with hydrogen and the opportunities in this market.

Project development in hydrogen

We are involved in a variety of issues that are key to realizing the potential of hydrogen in Norway. Here, you'll gain insight into our project model, from initial identification of opportunities to operational production.

  • Broad expertise

    a. Our strength lies in leveraging expertise across the firm. We assemble tailor-made teams with specialized knowledge in regulatory, financial, tax, and operational aspects.

  • Right decisions from the start

    a. Experience has taught us that making the right decisions early on simplifies and expedites the project. Conversely, not starting early enough can lead to delays and escalating costs later on.

  • Parallel processes

    a. It's essential to work with parallel processes from day one to ensure that the project can be easily financed, realized, and later sold.
