Trond Hatland Partner Bergen

Trond has litigated complex and profiled cases at all levels of the national legal system, and in arbitration. He has also litigated and won cases before the European Court of Human Rights (EMD). His fields of expertise comprise all aspects of commercial litigation, inter alia, disputes concerning material and IPR rights, shareholding and valuation disputes, liability cases and insurance disputes. Trond advises businesses in the private and public sector, and has for more than ten consecutive years been appointed as the Attorney for the Governmental body constituting the Disciplinary Board for Lawyers. In addition, Trond heads Thommessen's office in Bergen.

  1. Banco Popular Español S.A. -

    Assistance to bank sued with claims for payment and breach of executive attachment

    In 2012-2018, Hatland assisted Banco Popular Español S.A. (taken over by Banco Santander) in damages filed by PGS UK LTD (previously Arrow Seismic Invest II AS, "PGS"). PGS required approximately NOK 100 million in compensation from the bank and the co-defendant Armada Seismic Invest II AS. The bank was acquitted in both the Bergen District Court and Gulating Court of Appeal. In June 2018, PGS's appeal to the Supreme Court was refused. The bank was awarded full legal costs.
  2. GC Rieber Shipping AS and GC Rieber Crewing AS -

    Closure of staffing, hiring of labour

    In 2017-2019, Hatland has assisted GC Rieber Shipping AS and GC Rieber Crewing AS in liquidation of the intercompany staffing services, after which 66 naval workers were made redundant. The case was won in the Bergen District Court and Gulating Court of Appeal. The case is further appealed to the Supreme Court.
  3. Hav Line Group AS

    Attempts to halt operation of ships and land facilities

    Hatland is assisting Hav Line Group AS in a lawsuit against the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, in connection with commissioning of the harvest vessel "Norwegian Gannet" and land facilities in Hirtshals, Denmark. Hav Line won with a temporary injunction and currently operates in accordance with this injunction. The questions concerning invalid regulations, unauthorized statutory conduct and compensation liability are up for the courts, and the case is scheduled for April 2020.
